Can You Say ‘LORD Jesus’?

“The word is near you,
in your mouth and in your heart,
that is, the word of faith which we preach,
that if you confess with your mouth
the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart
that God has raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.”
Romans 10:8-9
It’s important to have an accurate translation of the Bible. This passage for example, has one word added that literally changes the meaning if not translated correctly:
“…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus…”
In the Greek interlinear, the word “the” is not there, it’s merely assumed – that’s why it’s in italics in most translations, and in the original Greek.
Why does this matter? It matters because it’s vital to salvation. Many would confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, even the demons do that!
“You believe that there is one God. You do well.
Even the demons believe — and tremble!”
James 2:19
But when you remove the implied “the,” it becomes:
“…if you confess with your mouth, ‘Lord Jesus…’”
And that changes the meaning. It goes beyond confessing that Jesus is the Lord. No, it is saying that your confession must be “Lord Jesus,” meaning he is YOUR Lord.
If he is not, then you are not saved. Speak to the Lord about this if you have not surrendered your life to him, and receive him as Lord.
Pray with me:
Lord Jesus, I’ve always known that you are Lord of all, but I have never acknowledged you as MY Lord. This day I surrender myself and my life to you, and I will forever call you, “Lord Jesus.”
