You Ask Amiss

“Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss,
that you may spend it on your pleasures.
Adulterers and adulteresses!
Do you not know that friendship with the world
is enmity with God?
Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world
makes himself an enemy of God.”
James 4:2-4

The “prosperity gospel” is all about making oneself prosperous in every way. It teaches how to get from God all that a person wants. The Word of God, quoted above, calls it spiritual adultery, and one who teaches those things is actually making himself “an enemy of God.” Why? Because their hearts are set on whatever they’re lusting for in the world – expensive cars, personal airplanes, large houses, gold and jewelry, status in one’s profession, and all the things their carnal minds lust after. Those in this camp are “enemies of God,” says his Word.

Does that mean one should never buy a house or a car? Of course not. It’s talking about an attitude of the heart. Where is your focus?

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy and where
thieves break in and steal;
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys
and where thieves do not break in and steal.
FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS
THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO.”
Matthew 6:19-21

Seek after things that will last forever. Ask to be filled with the love of God. Ask for the gift of repentance which will draw you near to God. Ask for the gifts of the Spirit through which you can minister to people effectively. And then you will experience the love, joy, peace, and all the fruits of the Holy Spirit that are far, far more valuable and more enjoyable than anything the world has to offer.
