The Futility Of Argument

“But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes
knowing that they generate strife,
and a servant of the Lord must not quarrel
but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
in humility correcting those who are in opposition,
if God perhaps will grant them repentance
so that they may know the truth,
and that they may come to their senses
and escape the snare of the devil,
having been taken captive by him to do his will.”
2nd Timothy 2:23-26

Arguing and quarreling produce only hard feelings. If you find yourself with someone who is worked up in anger and wanting to argue with you, you do NOT have to join it. Arguing back will only prod them deeper.

Blessed is the one who is able to control his own spirit in such a circumstance because it’s only human to shout back – but we are called to walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh. Arguing will NOT solve anything.

Prepare your heart beforehand that you will not be prodded into such a fruitless exchange. As a believer, always remember whom you represent. Who knows but that your opponent may even be won to Christ if you are in control of your response.

“A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly,
but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.”
Proverbs 15:1-2
