The Sting Of The Tongue

“Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
keep watch over the door of my lips.”
Psalm 141:3

One of the most difficult sins to overcome is the sinful words we speak. How much pain have we inflicted on others by things we have said to them or about them, yet we rise up in anger should anyone say an unkind thing to us or about us.

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.
The tongue is so set among our members
that it defiles the whole body,
and sets on fire the course of nature,
and it is set on fire by hell.”
James 3:6

The only remedy is prayer, asking for power to overcome, and asking for love to change our own hearts.

Pray with me:

“Father this is a really hard one. I ask for grace, for the power to overcome this sin which I so easily fall into. I know I don’t have the strength in myself to accomplish this. Please be my strength, and put your love into my heart which will hold me back from sinning against another with my tongue – whether they deserve it or not, and all the more if they do! Amen!”
