Know When It’s Better To Be Silent

“Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
for he will despise the wisdom of your words.”
Proverbs 23:9
Sometimes it’s better to just remain silent rather than speak truth that you know right well the listener will scorn. It’s always so tempting to spout out an answer in response; rare is the person who can hold back from responding in anger. If you know that the person you’re with is not going to accept what you say, then it’s best not to say it because if you do, you’re tempting the person to come back with a hateful or foolish answer. Don’t tempt him.
“Do not give what is holy to the dogs,
nor cast your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them under their feet,
and turn and tear you in pieces.”
Matthew 7:6
This takes the grace of God to achieve because most of us do not have that level of self-control. Remember that when you speak back to a fool, you make yourself a fool as well.
Pray for guidance to know when to speak, and when not to. Make it a matter of daily prayer. Sometimes silence is more effective than words.
