The Ticket Comes When You Get On The Train

“But even after we had suffered before
and were spitefully treated at Philippi,
as you know, we were bold in our God
to speak to you the Gospel of God
in much conflict…”
1st Thessalonians 1:2
In much conflict…
If persecution comes to believers, will we be bold in the message of the Gospel? If it becomes a crime to speak the truth, will we cower?
If you’re sure you will be bold in the face of persecution, examine yourself now – are you bold while there is little persecution? Do you speak the Gospel publicly now when the only persecution you may face might be hateful words from family or friends? Does their rejection stop you?
Some speak the Gospel now but are terrified of the future should it bring suffering for their faith. Most, no matter how “spiritual,” shudder at the thought of torture or death because of their witness. I am convinced though, that what seems impossible now will become possible then – should we be persecuted. During the Holocaust, Corrie Ten Boom told her father that she didn’t think she could endure suffering. Her father asked her at what point do you receive the ticket to get onto the train? She answered when it’s time to board the train. Yes, he said, you don’t get the ticket before you need it. Likewise, we will get the grace when we need it.
Brothers and sisters, do not fear. What seems impossible now is impossible only because the grace is not here now, but should the persecution come you will receive all the grace you need. Settle it in your mind that no matter what, you will share the Gospel to a lost and dying world. Your witness can make the difference between heaven and hell for those you’re appointed to bring it to.
