Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet

Of Principles And Consequences

“Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved,
but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall.”
Proverbs 28:18

One reason we humans don’t pick up on this principle is that the cause-and-effect doesn’t happen immediately. Nevertheless it is a principle that will always hold true: the perverse will eventually suddenly fall. For awhile he/she will seem to continue without consequence, and this very fact will convince him/her that there won’t BE a consequence.

God has placed certain laws and principles into effect. If you throw a ball up, it will come down. The law of gravity. Summer will follow spring, and fall will follow summer. Laws of nature that God has put into effect. There are spiritual laws or principles as well, and one of them is the principle of consequence which is often delayed so as to appear that there will be none. This troubled David the psalmist:

“But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the boastful,
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”
Psalm 73:2-3

….until…

vs: 16-17
“When I thought how to understand this,
it was too painful for me —
until I went into the sanctuary of God.
Then I understood THEIR END.”

Do not envy the prosperity of the wicked. It’s temporary. Very temporary.
